  • If I love you more, will you love me less?

“So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well. If I love you more, will you love me less?” 2 Corinthians 12:15

This is such an interesting statement that Paul makes to the Corinthians, and it made me wonder about how we love others. We say here at NewSong that we love without strings, but could we still show love while expecting that people would love us less in return? Even further, are we willing to love others without expecting to receive even an ounce of gratitude? We usually expect some reciprocity, but I believe that love of God transcends all our human expectations. We are to love, even though people will love us less. And when we have people love us less, then we ought to love them even more. The greatest example we see in the Bible is Christ’s abounding love for us as he approached the cross while facing abandonment and ridicule from the people he died for.

Could we share that same love with others? I believe that as we do, we will begin to see walls fall and people see the true love of Christ. It may take some time for people to get used to this outer space love, but it has infected us, hasn’t it?

This past weekend we held another iluminARTE event, where we had a couple hundred people shuffle through a café hearing about the same message of unconditional love from our artists. These artists have become close friends, and most are still seeking God. I spent some time speaking with José Luis from the rap group called Acaxao Movimiento. They rap in Nahuatl (the indigenous language of the Mayans) and in Spanish. But what struck me was their positive message in their music, and their mentions of God and his army. José Luis told me, “I am Christian of conviction, not of religion.” That statement pumped me up and further solidified the reason behind our events and NEO here in Mexico City. There are so many here that are spiritually keen yet turned off by the religious institution – we need set it all free and be the cWoW!

Here is a commercial he did for Adidas, check out his final statement in Nahuatl!

  • My daughters tears: The cost of following Jesus

Have you considered the cost of following Jesus?  What does He mean when he said that we must be willing to sacrifice our families in order to follow Him?  I recently had a first hand taste of what Jesus means through the tears my daughter Charis.

We were just back in California visiting family for the holidays, and we had a great time being back at NewSong and seeing family and friends.  But as the day for our departure approached, we grew sad knowing that we would miss everyone.  Two nights before we left, we let my five year old daughter know that we will be returning to Mexico City in a couple of days.  As I went to tuck her in for the night, she cried asking why we had to go back - she would miss her friends and her grandparents.  I tried to comfort her, but ended up crying with her in the dark.  "Daddy and mommy are trying to help people in Mexico, we need to go back and help people who are in need," I told her.  "We will come and visit America soon, ok?"  Charis regretfully nodded and I left her room with a very heavy heart, torn between the ministry in Mexico and the responsibilty of a father to provide for my family.  "This is the cost that we must pay," I thought and prayed...  as pricey it may be.

But the story doesn't end here, there is some redemption here.  Yesterday, as Charis and I were walking back from the park she saw an indigenous street kid, and asked is we could help him.  I guess through God's grace Charis saw a greater glimpse of the Kingdom!

  • Buckle up your seat belts & Pump up the volume!

People around the world, lend me your senses - the artist community is rising up to take a stand and making their voice be heard! What you are visually partking in is a taste of "iluminARTE", an artistic outreach event that NEO hosts on a quarterly basis. As you can see - it is third culture to the core, a fusion of culture, art, and music. It is also a community of purpose that is continually using the arts as a platform to share the message of God's love. Some of our artists are Christ followers, yet most are seeking, and we have established a loving community with them. For this past event the theme was "friendship", and we gave away small plants to serve as a reminder how we have been cared for by God and how we ought to care & nuture our friendships. If we nutured our friendships and poured our lives out in them, as Christ did for us, we can change the world. Are you ready to take the stand?

  • Artists Against All Odds!

The odds were against us again as we prepared for this past weekend's iluminARTE. For those of you who are not familiar with iluminARTE, it is an artistic outreach event, where we invite local artists to share their art on a theme (this time it was "friendship"), and we have the opportunity to share the Gospel using the platform of the arts. It seems as if every time we plan these events we face obstacles and opposition, but that affirms to us that God is in this!

As a team we all faced our own personal battles, we had weird ailments, bouts with depression, and madness in coordinating the artists. On top of all that, there was a water main break right on the block of the café where we held the event! It was in the news and everything. They had to tear up the road, which concerned all of us, since it would limit foot traffic and our ability to reach the general public. I felt as if I had to offer an apology to the café owner and city government, because I knew it was a direct opposition to iluminARTE. Here are some photos:

    Street block torn up!

    Entrance to the café

Although we had those odds come against us, we didnt falter, we knew that God wanted to reach this community with the message of "friendship". The café ended up packing out despite the street conditions!  Nothing can hold back the movement of God!

One our artists, Benjamín, gave a wonderful portrayal of the "Giving Tree" and we used that as a platform to share about the friendship that God offers us. Jesus said that he no longer calls us servants, but friends (John 15)! That is a revolutionary message! We gave people little plants to remind them of how to care for their friendships, to nuture them, to commit their selves to them. It was an amazing evening of community building and commitment to sacrifical friendships!

Here are some pictures of the artists that performed. We had MC's rapping to the theme of friendship and an African drumming group by Mexicans! Now that is third culture for you!

Next... a Night of Worship in November!  Please pray for this!  I will be uploading a video from the iluminARTE event here shortly!

    Peace Out!
